Give Thanks

The Give Thanks Bakery and Cafe is a little jewel tucked into downtown Rochester. It is next to Main Street Billiards but you have to enter the bakery through the back, facing the parking lot behind Main Street.

We get all of our bread here for the big holidays (Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas). Their daily bread selection is extensive and totally insane. You will have trouble choosing just one loaf. Get there early, their bread sells out almost every day. The folks that work here could not be nicer. The gal told me last time after staring at me intently that I had a nice face. I am not sure if she was working some kind of mind control to get me to buy more bread, but it worked.

They also sell European butter which is a super yummy to slather onto their rolls and bread. Do not miss their Almond Croissants, they are insanely good. Don't even think about the amount of calories that you are throwing down your gullet, you probably don't want to know. They also have a really cute selection of kids cookies, petit fours, torts, and all kinds of pastries that are too pretty to eat (but you will somehow manage it anyway!).

The Give Thanks Bakery and Cafe is located at 225 South Main Street.

Taco Loco

Don't be fooled by the look of this place. I used to drive on by, declaring it a dump under my breath. One of my friends insisted that I stop being an uppity foodie and actually go in and eat there. I am SO glad I did.

The food is really, really good. They have the old Mexican standbys on the menu, but my favorite dish that I get again and again are the mahi mahi grilled fish tacos. It comes with a fresh avocado relish and lots of cilantro. Super delish. The shredded pork burrito is also very good, served with fresh avocado slices. It is insanely huge. I eat half at the restaurant and the other half the next day for lunch. $3 house margs don't hurt, either.

The place is totally family-friendly. It is always chocked full of kids every time that we go. The only downside for me is that the kids meal comes with french fries. I always decline and ask for a cup of soup for my kiddos instead and they are happy to sub it for me. Be prepared for a wait on weekend nights, this place gets packed.

Check the Saver coupon book that comes in the mail, it has a buy one get one half off entrees coupon every month!

Later, Alligator

I have been hitting up my regular places looking for spring and summer clothes for my 4-year-old daughter. Is it just me, or have clothes for the little set started to get a little, dare I say, skanky? I don't want my daughter baring her midriff, wearing skulls and crossbones or little tiny halter tops. I want her to dress her in sweet, adorable clothes that are well made and age appropriate.

Well, I have found the answer to all of my problems. Later, Alligator! Not only does Later, Alligator produce handmade clothing, the owner/designer, Kristin Bull, makes a whole slew of cool products.

Your kids (boys and girls) can design their own creature t-shirts, pretty cool! She also makes beautiful dresses, girls t-shirts, sleeping bags and crib bedding. On the don't miss list, twirly skirts and ruffled jeans. All of the patterns are fresh and totally fashion forward. Fabulous!

Take a look at Later, Alligator on etsy.com or facebook.

Are you Funky?

I was sitting at my daughter's ballet class one afternoon when I overhead another mom talking about a great store downtown. Being the nosey gal that I am, I had to ask what store she was talking about. Where did she get almost new ballet shoes and leotards for half the price?

The chatty mom said she had just been to the Funky Frog, a children's resale clothing store. I was not down with it. Resale clothing for my kids, why, I never! I decided to stop being such a snob and check it out.

Not only is this store full of excellent quality kids clothes, it also has toys (can you say new Melissa and Doug toys that are way cheaper than anywhere else in town!), baby bouncers, books, shoes and crib bedding. Renee, the owner, is really on top of only accepting consignment items that are in excellent condition.

As for the clothing, The Funky Frog does not disappoint. We are talking Burberry, Mini Boden, Hanna Andersson, Ralph Lauren, Gap and Gymboree, to name a few. Really, does my son need DKNY jeans? You bet your sweet ass he does. Trust me, once you get in on this, you will never turn your nose up at resale again. Some people call it being a cheapskate. I call it being a smart frugalista!

The Funky Frog is located at 121 East 3rd street in downtown Rochester.

Welcome to my world

Yes, we live in a small town. But, that does not mean that we don't have options! Rochester, Michigan is a pretty cool place to live. We get a bad rap because we are close to Detroit Rock City, but there is so much to see and do here. We have access to awesome parks and trails, good food and fun shopping. Let's discover cool places together. Please let me know where you like to hang with you kids, where you shop and where you like to eat. I will give you my honest opinion, so please give me yours. Trust me, I can take it. Check back tomorrow for my favorite place to get kids clothes in our kick ass town!
